Books Years Behind

Years behind on your bookkeeping? It can be caught up.

It usually starts with one busy season. Then a year goes by, then another, and the tax returns are waiting on books nobody has touched. We catch up past years remotely for businesses anywhere in the country and get them ready for your CPA.

Where You Might Be

More than a year has gone by.

  • The tax returns are waiting on the books. Your CPA cannot finish without numbers, and the numbers do not exist yet.
  • You have bank statements and not much else. Receipts went into a drawer, or nowhere.
  • Someone is asking for financials. A lender or a buyer wants statements you cannot produce.
  • You do not know which year to start with. So nothing has started.
What You Get Back

Every year entered, reconciled and tax-ready.

  • All outstanding transactions entered and reconciled

  • Bank, credit card and loan accounts reconciled to the statements

  • Accounts payable and receivable brought up to date

  • Payroll recorded and missed entries adjusted

  • Financial statements your CPA can work from

How Catch-Up Works

Your CPA sets the order. We do the books.

When more than one year is behind, your CPA decides the order the years are done in, since your CPA is the one filing the returns. We work to that order.

  • A free 30-minute call about where things stand and how far back it goes
  • We look at your file and records before either of us commits to anything
  • You get the scope and the cost in writing, with no surprises later
  • Each year is entered and reconciled against your bank, credit card and loan statements
  • You see what we find as we find it

Catching up is recording what was never entered. If some of what was entered is wrong, that is cleanup, and books that are years behind usually need some of both. Here is how cleanup and catch-up fit together, and if your books are in QuickBooks, here is what we usually find in QuickBooks files.

What To Gather

Statements first. Everything else helps.

  • Bank statements
  • Credit card statements
  • Loan documents
  • Receipts and invoices, whatever you have
  • Payroll records
  • Any earlier bookkeeping file, even a half-finished one

Missing receipts are common when books are years behind. Tell us what you have and what you do not on the first call. Your statements are what we reconcile to. How any gaps are handled on a tax return is a question for your CPA. For what happens with each document, read the bookkeeping cleanup process, step by step. If a previous bookkeeper has your records, here is what to do after you fire your bookkeeper.

What It Costs

Priced by the number of months you are behind.

Catch-up is priced at your monthly rate times the number of months you're behind. Your monthly rate is set by transaction volume, shown in the Transactions per Month table on our pricing page. We look at your file and give you the number in writing before you commit to anything.

If Your Tax Returns Are Behind Too

We get the books current. Your CPA prepares and files the returns.

We are bookkeepers, and we do not prepare income tax returns. We get each year's books tax-ready and coordinate directly with your CPA. If you do not have a CPA, we can refer you to one we trust.
